Civil War Related Videos

Some serious.  Some humorous.  Lots of music!

I took a bunch of videos at the 146th Gettysburg Reenactment, and I'm busily posting them on YouTube now.  C'mon back in a bit!

If You’ve Only Got a Moustache

A Stephen Foster ditty, accompanied by pictures of Civil War generals with – you guessed it – moustaches.

Virginia

Beautiful song by Gene Miller from the musical For the Glory.

This is a new video, replacing the one I had.  It's now got photos plus some

live action scenes from Gettysburg.  Up, men!  Up, and to your posts!

Robert E. Lee

Art and photos, with the music being the ambient soundtrack of a scene from Gettysburg.

J.E.B. Stuart

Music is, of course, "Jine the Cavalry" by the 2nd South Carolina String Band.

Joshua L. Chamberlain

Music is "Little Round Top" from the Gettysburg soundtrack.

Thomas J. Jackson

Music is "Jackson in the Valley" by the 2nd South Carolina String Band.

Ulysses S. Grant
video #1

Music is "Battle Cry of Freedom."  I don't know who the choir is, but would like to know.

Ulysses S. Grant
video #2

A completely different take!  Music is "A Man's Gotta Be" from the musical Tom Sawyer.  Somehow, this song, which is performed in the musical by the town ne'er-do-well, has always put me in mind of Grant's incredible life story.  In 1857 he was out of the army, living in St. Louis, trying to eke out a living selling wood on the street corner, having pawned his watch to buy Christmas presents for his kids.  Eleven years later, he was elected President.  And there was that war in between.  There ain't no fightin' fate.

The Grant Memorial

These are my photos from the Grant Memorial in Washington, D.C.  The music is from the Ken Burns Civil War series, a different rendition of "Battle Cry of Freedom," with cannon.

William T. Sherman

Tribute to Cump.  Music is, most appropriately, "Marching Through Georgia."

Men of the Valley

Images of T.J. Jackson; audio is a mix of Stephen Lang's "Men of the Valley" speech from Gods and Generals and a flute rendition of "Stonewall Jackson's Way."

Mr. Lee

Mr. Lee, accompanied by the Bobbettes' "Mr. Lee."  You know you love Mr. Lee.  The handsomest sweetie that you ever did see.  C'mon, Mr. Lee, and do your stuff!

Reenactment: Dallas, Texas

No music in this one, only action!  This is a film I put together from a reenactment that took place at Heritage Village in Dallas, Texas.

Reenactment #2: Dallas, Texas

Another video from the reenactment at Dallas Heritage Village.  This one is a photo montage with music -- "Men of Honor" from the Gettysburg soundtrack.

Riding a Raid

Photos of cavalry artifacts and art, most from the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond (above is J.E.B. Stuart's saddle).  Music is Bobby Horton's rendition of "Riding a Raid."

The Cavalier's Glee

More art and artifacts with a cavalry theme.  This song is one you don't hear very often.  It was written by Captain William W. Blackford, author of the memoir War Years with Jeb Stuart.  He was the first of Stuart's four adjutants and then became an engineer on Stuart's staff, but he had many talents!  The song is performed here by Bobby Horton.

Gettysburg 145th Anniversary

I took these videos at the 2008 reenactment.  The Confederate living history guys are part of an awesome group called Lee's Lieutenants.

General Stuart!  Is your uniform hot?
General Stuart tells a famous story.  Who could ever get tired of hearing this one?
The 2nd South Carolina String Band performs "The Southern Soldier."
Fife and drum band performs "Old Dan Tucker."
The 20th Maine's position on Little Round Top, in the rain.
General "Extra" Billy Smith answers a reporter's questions about the new state of West Virginia.
Fife and drum band performs "Battle Cry of Freedom."
A little speech by General Armistead.
Fife and drum band performs "When Johnny Comes Marching Home."
A short video of East Cavalry Field from Stuart's position.
Fife and drum band plays an unidentified song!
General Lee explains the plural of "you all."
Ron Hawkins as General Longstreet.
Mathew Brady speaks.
Young harmonica player playing "Battle Cry of Freedom."  He was rapidly segueing from one song to another; I wish I'd gotten more footage of him!
Pickett and friends get ready for the big day. Trimble covers old ground, while Pettigrew uses a word nobody else knows.
General Ewell gets his licks in on General Trimble.  After 145 years, enough is enough!
A photo montage from the reenactment and the battlefield itself.  Music is "Dixie's Land" performed by the 2nd South Carolina String Band.

Longstreet

Someone asked me why I didn't have a video of Longstreet to go with the other generals.  So, here is Old Pete.  Music is "The Road We Traveled."

Richmond is a Hard Road to Travel

The history of Federal offensives whose goal was "On to Richmond!"  (The song was written before Chancellorsville.)  Performed by Lisa Meyer.

Benny Havens, Oh

The classic West Point song, performed poignantly by Jerry Ernst, starring Civil War generals from both sides who graduated from the Point.  Featuring at least one man from every class from which a graduate made the rank of general and served in the Civil War.
