Camp “Quien Sabe”
May 4 1862
My Dear
Brother
.
The life
insurance policy is rec’d. I again
thank you, for such an act of generosity for which my children & Flora will
ever be grateful.
.
We have had
two severe battles last of May & 1st of June – in which we were
completely successful on the right gaining everything but on the left – checked
in our pursuit by a formidable breastwork of the enemy, and the blunder of a
General, which cost us a General and had Hatton of Tenn, as gallant a
man as ever stepped, and had our beloved Jo. Johnston wounded, but it is hoped
not seriously.
.
I was from
point to point on the entire field which my position as Cavalry Comdr enables
me to be & was talking to Gen’l Jo. when he was shot. The ground was so boggy that Cavalry had no
chance at all, but I was determined to be useful, and Longstreet in
acknowledgement of my services on the right placed me in command of a Division
in front on the 2d . but its proper Commander Huger came up on
yesterday & resumed command. On the
left, I went over to see after the co-operation of Whiting with Longstreet so
as to complete the rout but, when I got there although under peremtory orders
from Longstreet to return forthwith – I did not the President & Gen. Lee would not let me leave. I begin to infer that they want me to be ubiquitous.
.
So much for
Self –
.
I have in
accordance with your wishes disposed of Shiloh, & will either send you a
draft or get a horse here as a present from you. In haste. Love &
kisses to all
Mo. affectionately
J.E.B.Stuart
We killed 2 generals,
Casey & Meagher, captured enemy’s fort & 15 pieces of artillery. JEBS
