My Darling One,
I was never in better health. I bought some shoes for you &
the children and some kid gloves, & sent them to care of Major Geo
Johnston Rapidan. I have since bought some needles and white
flannel, which will be sent you soon. I hope these little
fixtures will reach you safely. Cavalry has had some spirited
engagements with the enemy, with glorious results. Ladies of
Maryland make a great fuss over your husband, loading me with bouquets
begging for autographs buttons &c &c. What shall I
do? I find the most demonstrative joy on the part of most of the
ladies – Marylanders are flocking by hundreds to our
standards. I had a Balt. paper of yesterday – Pope’s
official report complains bitterly of FitzJohn Porter &
others. The enemy attacked our rear guard this evening, but it
turned upon the enemy with a brilliant charge routing him &
capturing 1 piece of artillery, a Col & several other prisoners
besides several killed. I have a Secesh apron for Dear Little
Flora. How is she & the boy getting on? It will be a
long time before [missing] from you. [missing] to Dr. Brewer to
be sent by some officer coming through. Robertson has been
relieved & sent to N.C.
“Joy’s mine.”
My command is now O.K. Give much love to Thos R. Price’s
family & Dr Price’s also. Channing is getting on very
well but looks very weary sometimes. Pelham is a Major.
What has become of Jno Esten Cooke? I must close.
May God bless you –
Dearest.
