My Darling One—
Geo Woodbridge is going down, so I will send a line by him. I
have been hoping to see Bro Alex every day but fear I shall not have
the pleasure. I expect to have to go to Culpeper as witness on
C.M. in that event I may call to see you
en passant
– I am and have been very busy on my reports, & I have
finished the great battle of Groveton. Channing is now
Act’g Chief of Staff. Having given Wat a fair trial, and
his health always interfering to a great extent with his duties I felt
it due to the country & to myself to ask him to resign which he
did, & is gone. I will recommend Channing in his stead, who
richly deserves the distinction. FitzHugh I feel assured will do
better in the Com Dept and I think I shall transfer him to it.
Make Maj Johnson Chf Qr Mr.
Major FitzHugh went on 30 days leave to buy a place for his
family. I wish I could settle you down in a nice home, quiet,
secure & lovely, such as I have often pictured in my fancy.
I want to see you Dear One to talk over matters – hold a council of war, &c. I expect to give And
w R. Venable a place on my staff, and also Beckham.
Young Robertson is my Asst Engr like T.R. Price Jr. I have not yet intimated to FitzHugh my intentions in his regard.
Lt Hagan is going to Richmond to day. Mr Garnett thinks a great
deal of you -- & says your room is ready whenever you want
it. I wrote to Jno R Cooke the other day. I am now messing
alone & always have some one drop in for sociability’s
sake. I send you enclosed an interesting reminiscence –
apply the words to yourself Dearest. I wish you would get the
music & learn to sing it. Send me the Carte de visite of you
& Nannie & Ellen – you promised – yours
full length – bless that pretty figure – the pattern of grace. Tell Jimmy Pa is saving some candy for
him (?) Write – why dont you?
Your loving
J.E.B.Stuart
