Camp Quien Sabe
June 4th 1862
My Darling Wife,

I have telegraphed you my safety from the perils of two battles through the grace of God.

My Cavalry could do nothing as the heavy rains had made the ground impassable.  I was determined to be individually useful, & Longstreet expressed his high appreciation of my service, as also the Prest, and, Gen Lee, by wanting me at both places at the same time – I exercised command at various times during the day, and was placed in command of Huger’s Div next day mine 3d in front – but he has since resumed command.  We were victorious.  Capturing 15 pieces of artillery killing old Casey & Meagher two Generals & any quantity of Field officers, &c, our own loss was severe & in the wound recd by Genl Jo. the Confederacy has recd a severe blow & our hearts are pierced with sorrow; but not disheartened we’ll avenge him and the rest of our fallen Comrades in the coming battle.  Kisses – kisses – kisses –
In haste – my Darling
