I send you
tomorrow enclosed $130 as I promised.
If you can get along without Lownes I will not send him. Robert is doing finely. That fellow Carson is the greatest bore in
the Confederacy, and Jno’s & my indignation at his having gone home with
them & spent a day at Dundee certainly reached the climax with me
when I saw by Nannie’s letter that the impudent puppy had dared to send his
love to you. I want you to write to
Cousin Nannie that you have no use for such a commodity as Carson’s love &
please to restore it to him untouched.
Carson is either the biggest liar or the biggest rascal in the
Confederacy – either is a barrier to your association with him. We tolerated his presumption until I had to
almost drive him to his company. Jno
telegraphed me to-day he was sent for to Dundee, so before you receive this he
is no-doubt either a Pa or a Ma. I
suppose you knew Powers has twins – one named Kate Stuart. Dabney Ball is now here. He has a daughter named Belle Stuart – so we
go –
Our dog Beauty
is a great pet & is now quite intelligent.
John Fontaine expects to live at Dundee Beaver Dam I think, but I
dont know when he will change. I recd
a nice present from Nat Boyden in the shape of eggs, butter & beef tongue,
at the Express Office all in Richmond all which I will transfer to
Maria. I do hope Little Posey is better
– Have you heard?
Give my
enduring love to all at Beaver Dam. I
send back the pincushion make it smaller as I have marked it & it will suit
first rate. I hear from several sources
that Von is courting Nannie. How is it?
Harbaugh is
here now & will probably leave for St. Louis tomorrow on my business. I send an automaton dancer for Jimmy, it was
made in imitation of Fitz Lee’s Lorenzo Thomas. Stick the wire in the darkey’s back – hold the wire in the left
hand over the spring board so that the feet just reach the board, then strike
with the right hand on the spring board keeping time with whistling singing or
musical instrument – (Dixie is a good time).
It is astonishing what double shuffle & other steps are
executed. Try it. I send a list of the battles, put half in
the upper 3 red corners, half on each side of the flag. Do get the fringe. Try again.
