Hd Qrs Cavalry Brigade
Skiff Creek April 21st 1862
My Darling Wife – Here we are very comfortable, but no battle yet – what the enemy is waiting for is most inexplicable.  It seems impossible to believe that McClellan would wait for so large a force to oppose him, when he might have advanced over a small one.

I hope ere this that you are safe & comfortable.  I wrote to you once since reaching this camp, but have not heard from you since Dabney came down.  I wish my letter directed to Williamsburg.

You remember I made a little tour through here in 59 from Old Point, the Country is much changed but Williamsburg retains much of its ancient interest and beauty.  Have you found out about the draft you sent Maria ($50) She had not received it when I passed through.  I send you the $50, remaining due on George. – I will send you $250 as soon as I draw April pay.  I saw very little of Maria and less of the Dr while in Richmond.  Maria said the Dr had been ordered to Yorktown.  Dr Madison the Med Director here, however, has not heard of it.  If the Dr leaves her, she ought to join you immediately.  You would be more happy and contented together.  The Dr looks very badly – disease is evidently preying on him.  The Little one I think is the image of you.  How are our Dear ones coming on?  Has Milly joined you yet?  I send aunt Milly to Mrs Chichester – we cant use her any longer.  Should a battle be fought here it will be the bloodiest on record, Cavalry will not participate much in it owing to the nature of the ground.  The violets were so sweet.  Kisses dearest and pray for your absent & devoted husband.
J.E.B.S.

P.S. Mr. Routh presents you with a pretty pr of  Gloves, I send by aunt Milly.  JEBS

P.S. Powers cashed April for me to day & I send you the draft. J.E.B.S.
