Genl. J.E.B. Stuart
Comdg. Cavy., Army of N. Va.
Dear Beaut:
I recd yesterday your note of the 29th inst., and am much obliged for
what you have done towards getting me in the army of N. Va., and for
your suggestion relative thereto, which I will try to work out.
About your own matter of the cavalry, I will find occasion to bring up
at fitting time. I have not forgotten it, and have thought over
it a good deal. The matter of Western Va. is still in
abeyance. Genl. Breckenridge has been spoken of as a suitable
Commander. What do you think?
I mentioned to the Secy of War the other day the exchange of
Genl’s Hampton & S.D. Lee as being agreeable to both, and all
concerned. He seemed to think well of it, and said he would bring
the matter before the President. If Genl. Hampton should apply
for a change, it might help the matter.
Capt Cooke’s case did not trouble me. I did as was
requested, and after that did not know what else to do, and therefore
sent the papers back to you, who I thought would know more about the
matter and the merits of the case than I do.
I have always supposed that our men had no idea that they were to go
home “until this cruel war is over”; but then voluntary
& public reinlistment for the war has a good effect at home and
abroad, and should, I think, be encouraged.
I am glad that the cavalry is filling up so well. I hope you will have a fine Command for the Spring.
I return the letter in reference to “Grumble Jones.”
Very truly yrs.
